About Mermaid Arteasa

What started as a birthday gift for my husband’s 40th has led me back to my childhood love of mermaids. I would have loved to surprise him with a mermaiding course, but I knew he’d be more excited about a Discover Freediving course instead. We both fell in love with the ocean and spent countless weekends exploring the breathtakingly biodiverse African sea forests along Cape Town’s coastline.

Swimming through the kelp forests, I was struck by their beauty, natural rhythm, and the sense of alignment they offered. It reawakened my love for mermaids and the feeling of being perfectly in sync with the underwater world—unrestrained, free to move as I wished.

My passion led me to become an Advanced Freediver and Rescue Freediver. I’ve also become a PADI Mermaid Instructor and will soon complete my Freediving Instructor course.

As our love for the ocean deepened, my husband and I, along with some friends, launched the #seathebiggerpicture Ocean Initiative, an NPO dedicated to introducing youth from disadvantaged communities to the wonders of our local Capetonian sea forests.

For me, it’s the combination of freedom, the escape from everyday noise, and the deep relaxation that comes with being underwater. And then there’s the fantasy, the joy of dressing up, the playfulness—it’s something I believe we all need more of in our lives
